MIAMI (Nov. 5, 2020) – FIU Athletics mourns the loss of former men's basketball head coach Marcos "Shakey" Rodriguez, who passed away at the age of 67 on Wednesday.
"We are devastated at the passing of Coach Shakey Rodriguez," current head coach
Jeremy Ballard said. "He is The Godfather of South Florida basketball and one of the best basketball coaches anywhere, at any level. Coach Shakey is the first coach to truly demonstrate that sustainable success at FIU is possible while still holding records at FIU that stand to this day."
Rodriguez served as the Panthers head coach from 1995-2000. With Rodriguez at the helm, FIU posted a 79-66 record, including a program-best 21-8 mark during the 1997-98 campaign.
"I am eternally grateful for the kindness that Coach Shakey showed me as a young first-time head coach, as well as the support he has given to our program," Ballard said. "While he will deservedly be celebrated and remembered as a fierce competitor and champion, Coach's most impactful legacy will be helping to build the lives of countless young men. We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to Coach's family and loved ones. Coach Shakey, we will miss you but remain forever grateful for all that you have given to the game and to generations of people."
At this time, FIU asks fans, friends and acquaintances of Coach Rodriguez to keep his family in their thoughts and prayers.
