MIAMI (Feb. 14, 2020) - On the heels of a 20-run performance, the FIU baseball team earned a victory over Fordham to open the 2020 season.
With the win, FIU improves to 1-0 on the year. Fordham falls to 0-1 after the 20-7 loss.
FIU did its most damage in the first four innings, hobbling the Fordham pitching staff with 14 runs over the early course of the game. The 20 runs scored marked FIU's highest output since scoring 23 against WKU on May 18, 2017.
Logan Allen looked the part of his preseason All-American billing, as roughly 100 scouts were on-hand to watch the Panthers play the Rams Friday night. Allen struck out 11 batters in five innings of work to earn the win, while only surrendering two runs. With the 11 strikeouts on Friday night Allen now has 226 for his Panther career, which is now tied for ninth-most in program history.
Jarrett Ford led the Panthers at the top of the order, earning a game-high four hits and three runs batted in. The sophomore also swiped two bags to open the season leading the team in the stolen base column.
Justin Farmer also had a great night, earning a double and triple in his first game at FIU.
KEY STAT
The Panthers hit .625 (5-8) in the lead-off spot, with FIU starting five innings with a hit to get things going.
UP NEXT
The Panthers will return to the diamond on Saturday night, as FIU takes on Fordham at 6 p.m. looking for its second win of the series.
