HATTIESBURG, Mississippi (Feb. 15, 2020) – The FIU men's basketball team faced Southern Miss in a Conference USA battle on Saturday afternoon at Reed Green Coliseum. The Panthers fell to the Golden Eagles 75-67 to close out the road trip.
With the loss, FIU goes to 17-10 this season and 8-6 in conference play. USM moved to 9-18 this year and 5-9 against league opponents.
The Panthers opened the contest shooting 33.3% but allowed Southern Miss to go 44.4% from the field and 41.7% from beyond the arc. Devon Andrews led the Panthers with 13 points in the opening stanza, but the team trailed the Golden Eagles 31-24 at halftime.
Following the break, the FIU squad improved offensively, posting a 44.1 field-goal percentage in the half, but continued to struggle on the defensive end. The Golden Eagles shot 66.7% from the field and went 5-8 from the three. The Panthers were outscored 44-43 in the half and dropped the C-USA battle 75-67.
FIU closed out the loss shooting 39.7% from the field, and the team went 12-39 from behind the arc. Andrews led all players with 24 points and Antonio Daye, Jr. improved on his season-best when he tallied 21 points in the loss. Trejon Jacob was the third Panther player to post double-figure scoring, notching 11 in the loss.
