MIAMI (Feb. 23, 2020) - The FIU baseball team was tested late Sunday, but the Panthers prevailed 7-5 to sweep George Mason and stay undefeated on the year.
With the win, FIU moves to 7-0 as the Panthers welcome Pepperdine to Miami next weekend. The Waves were 6-0 entering their game on Sunday.
The score was tied at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh, but the Panthers got a pair of runs to propel FIU to a sweep-clinching win. A
Kaeber Rog single gave FIU the go-ahead run, before a
Jarrett Ford SAC fly would score
Luis Chavez to make it 7-5.
The trio of
Derek Cartaya,
Ben Rozenblum and
Juan Teixeira each had a pair of hits to lead FIU at the plate. Teixeira also brought in a run to bring his team-leading RBI total to 12 for the year.
The Panther bullpen combined to pitch 5.1 innings, allowing no runs and just four hits.
Jose Machado earned the win in relief, while
Alejandro Torres picked up the save.
KEY STAT
FIU hit .750 (6-8) in the lead-off spot, while George Mason was just .222 (2-9) on the afternoon.
