MIAMI (Feb. 28, 2020) - A late comeback by the FIU baseball team fell short on Friday night, as the Panthers dropped a 9-8 decision to visiting Pepperdine for their first defeat of 2020.
FIU falls to 7-1 with the loss, while Pepperdine improves to 8-1 on the year.
Friday's game went 12 innings, with the Panthers sending the contest into extras after a four-run ninth to make it 7-7. Pepperdine hit a two-run shot in the top of the 12th to pull ahead, however, before another rally for the Panthers fell short in the bottom half of the inning to bring the final score to 9-8.
Ben Rozenblum finished the game with a team-high four hits, while driving in a run.
Derek Cartaya and
Justin Farmer each collected three hits on the night, while
Jose Garcia drove in a pair of runs after his ninth-inning double.
Logan Allen got the start on the mound for the Panthers, going seven innings and striking out seven batters in the no-decision.
KEY STAT
FIU outhit Pepperdine 16-8 and earned five RBI with two outs, but the Wave hit three homers on the night to account for all but one of their runs on Friday.
