MIAMI (Feb. 6, 2020) - A four-run third inning helped propel the FIU softball team to a 6-1 victory on Thursday night, as the Panthers opened the season with a win over visiting Cal.
With the win, the Panthers improve to 1-0 on the year. Cal drops to 0-1 on the young season.
Allison Muraskin earned the win in the circle, after throwing a complete game and surrendering just one run. The junior allowed just four hits spread out over seven innings and struck out one batter.
Jessica Rivera went 2-for-2 to lead FIU at the plate, with a crucial two-run double coming in the third inning.
Alexis Johns,
Jocelyn Alonso and
AnnMarie Cooker earned a pair of hits as well, with Alonso and Cooker each driving in a run to help the Panther cause.
KEY STAT
The FIU offense hit .458 (11-24) for the game, while going .500 (5-10) with runners in scoring position. The Bears were held to .154 (4-26) and hitless (0-4) with runners in scoring position.
UP NEXT
The Panthers return to the field on Friday, Feb. 7 as FIU plays two home contests against Penn State and Michigan State at 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
