MIAMI (June 11, 2020) – FIU's
Logan Allen was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the second round of the 2020 MLB Draft on Thursday evening, as the Panther ace was picked 56th overall. With the selection, Allen becomes the third-highest pick in FIU baseball history.
MLB's Draft usually consists of 40 rounds, however, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, this year's draft was shortened to five rounds.
Allen becomes the 23rd Panther selected in the MLB Draft since FIU joined Conference USA in 2014 and the fourth Panther to be drafted by the Cleveland Indians. With the selection on Thursday, the Panthers have had at least one player picked in the MLB Draft each year dating back to 2011.
The preseason All-American and C-USA Preseason Pitcher of the Year made four starts in 2020, going 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA in 25.2 innings pitched. The lefty racked up 41 strikeouts as well to rank 15th in the nation last season.
A mainstay in the Panthers' pitching rotation since arriving on campus, Allen sits sixth all-time for career strikeouts at FIU with 246. Allen was also a former freshman All-American and two-time C-USA All-Conference selection, while becoming the first Panther to make the prestigious USA Baseball Collegiate National Team in 2019.
