No. 12 FIU Falls to No. 13 Clemson

Panthers start fast but slip in second half

CLEMSON, South Carolina (Oct. 26, 2021) - The No. 12 ranked FIU men's soccer team got off to a strong start in the opening period against No. 13 Clemson on Tuesday night, but the match was a tale of two halves as the Panthers fell to the Tigers by a score of 4-0 on the road.

FIU's record now stands at 10-2-2 overall on the season, including an undefeated 5-0-1 in Conference USA play for sole possession of first-place in the league standings.

FIU saw two shots on-goal immediately in the opening moments, with Bernardo Dos Santos Monteiro firing the first strike only 54 seconds into the contest, and Carlos Scheckermann placing another on-frame in the 6th minute.

The Blue & Gold out-shot Clemson by a margin of 7-4 the rest of the first period, including a 4-2 advantage in shots-on-goal. Stephen Afrifa saw two chances on-goal at the 35th and 45th minutes of action but FIU was unable to find the back of the net. Tyler Hogan nabbed two saves to keep the match scoreless before the break.

Clemson was able to crack the scoreboard just after halftime at the 46th minute thanks to a penalty kick awarded by the officials. FIU fired off six more shot attempts and earned two corner kicks in the second half as the Panthers held their own against the Tigers, but Clemson was able to escape with another three scores in the final 45 minutes.

Afrfia led all Panthers in shot attempts (3) and shots-on-goal (3) for the night. Matias Barraza, Mauro Bravo, and Yushi Nagao also logged shot attempts in the match.

Scheckermann and Kareem Riley logged a full 90 minutes in the Panther backline.
