MIAMI (Oct. 26, 2021) – After strong performances in the road victory against Old Dominion,
Idelys Vazquez and
Ithaisa Vinoly were named the Defender of the Week and Goalkeeper of the Week, for the peroid ending Oct. 24, league office announced on Tuesday.
Vazquez, the Virginia Beach native, was named to the weekly award after providing a major presence on the backline for the Panthers 1-0 win at ODU. Vazquez helped the Blue & Gold keep the aggressive Monarch attack out of the net. The senior added to the defensive shutdown by the Panthers with multiple blocks in the box. The effort handed the number one team in C-USA its first loss in league play. This is Vazquez's first Defender of the Week award in her career.
Vinoly registered her third clean-sheet on the season after shutting down the number one team in the conference in the road victory at ODU en route to her first Goalkeeper of the Week award. Vinoly kept the Monarchs attack at bay, tallying five saves and while against her second-most shots faced on the season (24). The win gave FIU their first during league play while handing ODU their first loss in conference.
Vazquez has logged the most time of action for the Panthers during league play (695). The senior's strong defensive play in the FIU backline has earned her starts in eight straight matches. In Vinoly's 11 starts, she has recorded 50 saves on the season, sitting fourth overall in the conference for saves per match. The two players of the week awards marked FIU's first of the 2021 campaign.
