MIAMI (Feb. 19, 2021) – In front of a capacity crowd on Opening Night, the FIU baseball team dominated the UIC Flames by a score of 9-4.
 
With the win, FIU improves to 1-0 on the season while UIC falls to 0-1. FIU has now won back-to-back season openers for the first time since winning on Opening Night in 2014 and 2015. FIU downed Fordham 20-7 last season to open the year. 

Tyler Myrick shined on the bump, going six strong innings and giving up only one earned run on two hits. The righty also struck out seven batters, which are the most for Myrick since he had eight against FAU in 2018.

FIU did its most damage in the first inning however, after the first four batters of the evening were walked to kick start an eight-run frame. The Panthers added one more run in the fifth inning when Juan Teixeria singled home Ben Rozenblum to add an insurance run.
 
At the plate, seven different Panthers collected hits with Teixeira, Rozenblum and freshman Adrian Figueroa each having two base knocks and two runs batted in. The freshman duo of Steven Ondina and Dante Girardi each collected a hit in their collegiate debuts.  

UP NEXT
The Panthers and the Flames conclude the weekend set on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. Game two will start 45 minutes following the conclusion of game one.
