Panthers Lasso Roadrunners in Series Opener

FIU runs past UTSA for win

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 5, 2021) – Despite being shorthanded, the FIU women's basketball team topped the UTSA Roadrunners 72-60 on Friday night.

With the win, FIU improves to 8-7 overall and 5-4 in Conference USA play. The eight wins are tied for the most in a season since the 2013-14 campaign.

Jiselle Thomas led all scorers with 18 points, including 10 in the pivotal second half. Joining Thomas in double figures, Fujika Nimmo scored a season-high 17 points while Alma Danielsson showed off her range, going 4-8 from distance for 14 points. Emerald Ekpiteta rounded out the Panther quartet in double figures with her sixth double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

Liz Satter made her Panther debut after missing the first 14 games of the season due to injury.

Despite the weekend opener being a game of runs, FIU only trailed for a total of nine seconds in the entire game. UTSA battled back in the fourth quarter from a 10-point third-quarter deficit to tie the game at 55-55 before an Ekpiteta-fueled 11-0 run put the Panthers out front for good.

FIU goes for the series sweep on Saturday with tip-off slated for 5 p.m. ET against UTSA. The game can be streamed on CUSA.tv.
