SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 6, 2021) – On an evening that saw 210 total points scored in three overtimes, the shorthanded FIU women's basketball team mounted a 15-point second half comeback to prevail 107-103 over the UTSA Roadrunners.
With the win, FIU improves to 9-7 overall and 6-4 in Conference USA play. The nine overall wins are the most in a season since 2013-2014.
Fujika Nimmo shined in the second half and overtime with 23 of her career-high 28 coming after halftime. Nimmo's 28 is the most by a Panther in a game since Alexis Gordon dropped 40 on Vermont in December of 2017.
Jiselle Thomas matched her career-high with 24 points before fouling out, while
Alexus Wykoff set a new career-high with 20 points of her own, including the last four points in the third overtime to seal the Panther victory.
Alma Danielsson drained a game-high five threes on her way to 17 points and
Emerald Ekpiteta led all Panthers in rebound with 11 boards.
The Panthers were sluggish out the gate heading into halftime down 35-24 before a comeback of monumental proportions that included a 25-8 run in the third quarter fueled by Nimmo and Danielsson to tie the game at 52-all entering the final frame of regulation.
The real fun began in the fourth quarter when both teams exploded for 28 points each. FIU appeared to go up 81-78 before a lane violation was called on the Panthers to wipe out a Nimmo made free throw. UTSA made a driving layup with a tick left on the game clock to tie the game at 80 and send it to overtime.
In the first and second overtimes, the two teams traded 10 points in the first and seven points in the second while multiple players on both sides fouled out before heading to the third and final overtime tied at 97.
An
Emily Atsinger layup with 3:49 left in the third overtime followed by Wykoff's four-straight points catapulted FIU to victory.
FIU now returns east for a two-game home set with visiting UTEP on Feb. 12-13.
