Women's Soccer Falls to WKU

Panthers score three goals but come up short

BOWLING GREEN, Kentucky (March 4, 2021) - The FIU women's soccer team nearly completed a thrilling comeback against WKU on Thursday night, but the Panthers ultimately fell to the Hilltoppers by a score of 4-3 to open Conference USA play.

FIU's record now stands at 2-4 this spring and 0-1 in C-USA, while WKU improves to 3-1 on the year and 2-0 in league play.

The Panthers trailed by a margin of 1-0 to start the second half, after Kiera Gibson recorded seven saves in the opening period to keep FIU within striking distance of the Hilltoppers. The Blue & Gold managed to score three goals after the break, as Alyssa Storey scored twice for the Panthers at the 59th and 77th minute-marks. Idelys Vazquez tacked another goal on at the 82nd minute and cut FIU's deficit to only one goal, but WKU prevailed with three second half goals of its own to stave off the Panthers.

Storey recorded the first points of her FIU career and led the Panthers with four. Junior-transfer Vazquez scored her first FIU goal. Carmen Marin and Laia Muñoz Danon were both credited with assists on the night.

Between the posts, Kiera Gibson racked up 11 saves, marking the most by a Panther goalkeeper since Christina Velazquez recorded 13 on Oct. 21, 2018 against North Texas.

UP NEXT
