Panthers Fall to Gamecocks in Hard-Fought Match

FIU caps home slate for the spring

MIAMI (April 10, 2021) - The FIU men's soccer team put up a great fight on Saturday, but ultimately fell to visiting South Carolina in the home finale, 3-2.

Prior to Saturday's game, Jordi Avila, Matias Barraza, Alessandro Campoy, Deco Costa, Owen Green, Adam Hassan and Kareem Riley were honored for Senior Day.

After falling behind 1-0 early, the Panthers struck back to tie the game in the 16th minute as David Garcia scored off a corner kick from Barraza.

The Gamecocks scored two more times in the 17th and 40th minutes following a breakaway goal and penalty kick. FIU narrowed the gap right before halftime however, as Stephen Afrifa scored with just two seconds remaining to make it 3-2 at the break.

Despite five goals in the first 45 minutes, both teams were held scoreless in the final 45 minutes as the Gamecocks took the 3-2 decision. FIU finished the match with a 21-10 advantage in shots.
