HUNTINGTON, West Virginia (April 18, 2021) – In a game that saw 18 combined runs scored, the FIU baseball team fell 10-8 to the Marshall Thundering Herd on Sunday afternoon to split the four-game weekend road series.
The duo of
Derek Cartaya and
Luis Chavez spearheaded the FIU bats on Sunday with a combined six hits, six runs batted in and two runs scored. Aiding in the attack, the corner infield tandem of
Adrian Figueroa and
Dante Girardi each had two base knocks and two runs scored, while Figueroa added an RBI.
Ben Rozenblum also had a hit and an RBI on the day.
FIU opened the scoring with a run in the fourth and fifth to take an early 2-0 lead, before the Herd scored seven unanswered to take a 7-2 lead after six innings played.
A Cartaya double down the right field line sparked a three-run Panther seventh that saw the Marshall lead shrink to 7-5, before the Herd scored one in the home half of the seventh and two more in the eighth to make it 10-5 heading to the ninth.
In the ninth, Chavez hit a bases-loaded double to score three but the Panther rally fell short at 10-8.
