Women's Soccer Falls in Overtime to UNF

Panthers come up just short in a thriller

MIAMI (Aug. 26, 2021) - The FIU women's soccer team battled until the very end, but ultimately fell to the visiting North Florida Ospreys in extra time on Thursday night by a score of 1-0.

FIU's record now stands at 1-2 for the 2021 campaign, while UNF improves to 2-1.

The first period saw a stalemate from both sides, as the Panthers kept even with the Ospreys and denied all scoring attempts at the FIU net. The Blue & Gold defense held strong and managed to keep UNF off the board despite trailing in the shot margin by a tally of 8-3 in the opening period.

FIU came out firing in the second half, gaining more control and applying increased pressure on the opposing net. The Panthers saw shot-on-goal attempts from five different Panthers after the break, with Kédie Johnson, Sydney Amparo, Laia Muñoz Danon, Francesca Brito, and Courtney Walker all seeing chances to seize the lead. FIU and UNF traded eight shot attempts apiece in the final 45 minutes, but both squad's goalkeepers played admirably to keep the sheet clean at the end of full time.

While the Panthers displayed a valiant effort to take a tough UNF squad to a sudden-death period, the Blue & Gold were eventually toppled due a game-winning goal in the 91st minute by the Ospreys.

Overall, FIU led in shot-attempts for the second match in a row, firing away eight to the Osprey's seven. A total of seven Panthers placed shots on-frame during the match.

Ithaisa Vinoly recorded six saves for FIU on the night, as the first-year Panther shined and provided a bright spot on a tough night.
