MIAMI (Aug. 29, 2021) – The FIU women's soccer team held Lipscomb to its lowest scoring output of the season on Sunday at FIU Soccer Stadium, but the Blue & Gold were unable to overcome a 1-0 deficit to the Bisons.
FIU's record now stands at 1-3 on the season, while the Bison remain undefeated and improve to 4-0.
The Panthers competed admirably against an undefeated Bisons team, giving Lipscomb its toughest challenge this season. A strong defensive effort by the Blue & Gold slowed down a Lipscomb offense that had scored at least two goals in every match this year, including against Power Five foes Miami and Mississipi State.
FIU allowed its only goal of the match early on at the 10-minute mark, after the Bisons created a breakaway that resulted in a score. Following that, it was a defensive stalemate on both sides for the rest of the match.
The Panthers had opportunities in the attacking third during the opening period and paced Lipscomb in shot attempts (9-6), including three on-goal, but the Blue & Gold never found the back of the net. Goalkeeper
Ithaisa Vinoly recorded three saves before the break.
FIU's defense stayed strong after the intermission to keep the deficit at one goal, but the Panther attack was unable to generate enough quality chances to equalize. The best opportunity for FIU seemed to come at the 72nd minute mark, when
Reagan Bridges placed a header just wide of the left post on a set piece opportunity.
Vinoly tallied seven saves for the day and was once again a bright spot for FIU. Bridges and
Carmen Marin played a full 90-mintues in the Panther backline and helped bolster FIU's strong defensive effort.
For the day, the Panthers held the Bisons to three shots below their game average.
