MIAMI (Oct. 1, 2022) – #RV FIU Men's Soccer hosted No. 22 Memphis, Saturday night, in an American Athletic Conference match taking out the Tigers, 3-2.
After a quiet start to the first half, it was the Panthers that opened the scoring.
Yushi Nagao picked up the ball near midfield and went on a strong run before hitting a long distance shot into the bottom left corner to put FIU ahead 1-0.
The one goal advantage would hold heading into halftime.
The second half would see fireworks as both offenses came to life, seeing a total of four goals.
Memphis found an equalizer in the 51st minute when a shot by the Tigers' Toby McCallum took a looping deflection over the head of goalkeeper
Matt Levy.
The Tigers would take the lead 21 minutes later after converting on a penalty kick to bring the score to 2-1.
With time running out the Panthers mounted a comeback push.
In the 83rd minute, a
Philip Hildebrandt cross would make its way to the far post where freshman
Joao Domingues would smash home the close range chance to tie the match.
Just six minutes later,
Stephen Afrifa would battle his way into the Memphis box and draw a penalty. His attempt was saved but
Bernardo Dos Santos would swoop in and hammer home the rebound to put FIU ahead, 3-2.
As the final whistle blew the Panthers would walk away with another victory against a ranked opponent.
