FIU Volleyball Drops Home Match Against No.22 WKU

Maylen Mitrovich Made Her Season Debut and Led FIU with 12 Assists

Miami, Fla. -  The FIU women's volleyball team (7-19, 4-8 C-USA) was back in action at home today taking on the top seeded Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (25-2,13-0 C-USA). The Panthers were unable to come out with the victory and the Hilltoppers remain undefeated in conference play after winning today 3-0 (20-25, 16-25, 10-25).

In the first set, the Hilltoppers stormed out to a 4-0 lead and continued to roll form there. The Panthers were able to keep the score close, but they never tied the set as they were playing from behind from start to finish. Western Kentucky won the first set 25-20 and continued to play well as the match progressed.

In the second set, the Panthers made a lineup change. Midway through this set, setter Maylen Mitrovich was subbed in for Saran Nading and this was her first in-game action of the 2022 season. Mitrovich finished the match with 12 assists to lead the Panthers and chipped in three digs.

The Hilltoppers continued to roll in the second set and at one point had a 12-1 lead. FIU was able to cut WKU's lead in half, but the deficit was too much to overcome and the Hilltoppers won 25-16. Western Kentucky earned the sweep after winning the third set in dominant fashion 25-10. The Panthers' offense struggled to string points together as not a single player on FIU reached double digits in kills. The Hilltoppers have now won an impressive 18 sets in a row for six consecutive sweeps.

Kira Givans led the Panthers with seven kills and Katie Turner led the team with 13 digs.
