MIAMI (March 18, 2022) – On the opening night of Conference USA play, the FIU baseball team fell to the Thundering Herd of Marshall by a score of 11-3.
Alec Sanchez paced the Panther offense once again on Friday night as the centerfielder homered for the team-leading fifth time this season.
Robert Sotolongo pushed his hit streak to seven games with a pair of base knocks while scoring twice.
The duo of
Adrian Figueroa and
Dante Girardi each collected a base hit on the night.
Marshall opened the scoring on the third pitch of the game with a solo home run. The Panthers tied it back up in the home half of the first when Sotolongo doubled before coming around to score on a Figueroa single to center.
The Thundering Herd scored five unanswered runs before Sanchez's two-run blast in the sixth cut the Marshall lead to 6-3.
The visitors from Huntington plated five more runs over the final two innings to take the weekend opener 11-3.
Panther starter
Patrick Pridgen was tagged with the loss after surrendering six earned runs over just 3.2 innings of work with three strikeouts.

FIU and Marshall will play in game two of the weekend set at FIU Baseball Stadium on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. ET.
