Panthers Even Series with FAU

FIU looks to win series on Sunday

BOCA RATON, Florida (April 30, 2022) – Behind the right arm of Carlos Lequerica and timely hitting, the FIU baseball team prevailed 6-4 over the FAU Owls to even the three-game weekend series on Saturday afternoon.

In his best performance as a Panther, Lequerica paced FIU on the mound by pitching seven innings of three-run ball with eight strikeouts. The seven innings and eight strikeouts are both season-highs for the junior righty.

At the dish, seven of the nine Panthers reached base safely on Saturday with Dante Girardi and Ruben Carpio collecting two-hit games. Saturday's victory marked the third-straight game in which Carpio has two hits.

Not to be outdone, The duo of Adrian Figueroa and Jorge Ramirez each drove in a pair of runs while scoring once. Saturday was Ramirez's sixth muti-RBI game of the season.

The bats got to work early on Saturday by scoring three runs before Lequerica even took the mound. Figueroa worked a leadoff walk to spark the Panthers before Alec Sanchez walked two batters later. Both came around to score when Ramirez pulled the first pitch he saw down the left field line for a two-run double. Ramirez scored on an FAU error to make it 3-0 after the top of the first.

FAU answered with two runs in the home half of the inning to cut the FIU lead to 3-2.

After three-straight singles with one away in the top of the fourth, Figueroa stepped to the plate and slapped a two-run single to right field that scored Girardi and Carpio to push the Panther advantage to 5-3.

FAU hit solo home runs in the sixth and eighth to make it 5-4 heading to the ninth inning.

In the ninth, a Robert Sotolongo sacrifice fly scored Girardi to give FIU some much-needed insurance at 6-4.

After back-to-back singles to start the frame, Angel Tiburcio slammed the door shut the shut to preserve the 6-4 Panther victory. Tiburcio picked up his second save of the season in the process.
