Panthers Fall To WKU on Saturday Afternoon

Series concludes Sunday

BOWLING GREEN, Kentucky (April 9, 2022) – The FIU baseball team stumbled 9-2 on Saturday afternoon to the homestanding Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.

"I am very proud of the team's effort thus far and I fully believe that the chemistry in the clubhouse is exactly where it needs to be," coach Mervyl Melendez said. "There is a great amount of youth and talent on this team and were are not far off from putting it together on the field."

Five different Panthers collected a base hit on Saturday including Adrian Figueroa, Noel Perez and Ruben Carpio each tallying a double on the afternoon.

Carpio's double in the top of the eighth was the right fielder's first double since February 26 against Michigan.

The Hilltoppers scored two in the first, three in the third and three more in the sixth to build an 8-0 advantage with three innings to play.

FIU threatened in the top of the eighth when the Blue and Gold had two on with no out after a Dante Girardi single and Carpio's double, but to no avail.

WKU tacked on one more in the home half of the eighth before the Panthers finally broke through in the top of the ninth with a pair of runs for the 9-2 final.

Carlos Lequerica
was dealt the loss for FIU after allowing five runs over five innings of work.
