Panthers Fall In Series Finale at UAB

FIU concludes the season at home with Rice

BIRMINGHAM (May 15, 2022) – The FIU baseball team dropped the series finale 14-4 in eight innings on Sunday afternoon to the homestanding UAB Blazers.

Zac Lampton was tagged with the loss on Sunday as the lefty surrendered five runs over 0.1 innings of work. Panther starter Owen Puk tossed two innings of shutout ball with one strikeout. In relief, Mario Fernandez pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings with a punchout.  

Dante Girardi led FIU at the plate with the sophomore's third three-hit game of the season. The Panther second baseman also drove in a run in the weekend finale.

Matthew Gonzalez Collected two base knocks on the afternoon, while Ruben Carpio extended his hit streak to 11 games with a single in the top of the first. 

Just like in Saturday's instant classic Alec Sanchez scored the opening run of the game when the outfielder charged home on Carpio's one-out single through the left side. 

FIU held a 1-0 advantage until UAB scored a five-piece in the home half of the third to take a 5-1 lead with three in the books.

Noel Perez slapped a single through the left side that scored Gonzalez in the fourth to make it 5-2 Blazers.

UAB answered with a pair of runs in the fourth to push the advantage to 7-2 after four.

Girardi drove in Gonzalez with a base hit back through the box before Mario Zabala scored on a fielder's choice to cut the deficit to three runs at 7-4.

The Blazers plated a pair in the home half of the sixth before putting the game away in the eighth with a five-run frame for the 14-4 final.

FIU returns to Miami to close out the season with a three-game home series with the Rice Owls. Senior weekend gets under with a 7 p.m. ET first pitch on May 19.
