MIAMI – Seven former members of the FIU football program are taking part in NFL Training Camps, which opened this week.
Representing FIU across the NFL are Jonnu Smith (Patriots), Stantley Thomas-Oliver (Panthers), Teair Tart (Titans), Ike Brown (Raiders),
D'vonte Price (Colts),
Josh Valentine-Turner (Seahawks) and
Tommy Heatherly (Miami).
Smith (TE/New England) is entering his sixth NFL season and his second with the Patriots. He snagged 28 passes for a total of 294 yards and a touchdown in 2021. He has totaled over 140 catches for nearly 1,600 yards through his initial four professional seasons.
Smith was drafted by Tennessee in the third round (100th overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft, before signing as an unrestricted free agent with New England in 2021.
Tart (DT/Tennessee) joins the Titans' camp for the third consecutive season. He started 10 games in 2021 while appearing in 11 overall. Tennessee Titans signed Tart as a rookie free agent following the 2020 NFL Draft.
Thomas-Oliver III (CB/Carolina) enters his third training camp with the Panthers. He has appeared in 22 games over the previous two seasons. Thomas-Oliver III was drafted in the seventh round (221st overall) of the 2020 NFL Draft by Carolina.
Brown (CB/Las Vegas) joins the Raiders following a standout 2022 season for the New Orleans Breakers of the USFL, which saw him total 16 tackles and two interceptions for 98 yards, including one returned for a touchdown. Brown originally signed with the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent in 2020.
A trio of recently departed Panthers are also participating in NFL camp for the first time after signing as undrafted free agents including Price (RB/Indianapolis), Valentine-Turner (CB/Seattle) and Heatherly (P/Miami).
Price closed out his career ranked second on the FIU career rushing list with 2,203 rushing yards.
Heatherly was selected as the Conference USA Specials Teams Player of the Year in 2021 after rewriting the Panthers' punting records.
Valentine-Turner appeared in 23 games over three seasons while compiling 82 tackles, eight passes defensed and an interception.
