MIAMI – The #23 FIU men's soccer team scored four goals in the second half Saturday night to take down the Saint Mary's Gaels in a 5-1 non-conference matchup at home.
After the Gaels scored the first goal of the night in the 17
th minute, the Panthers proceeded to rattle off five consecutive goals in their seventh victory of the season.
The Panthers maintained possession and finally got on the board in the 35
th minute as
Philip Hildebrandt slotted a ball into the box, giving way to
Simon Afrifa to fire off a goal to tie up the match at one.
Heading into the second half, FIU came out blazing offensively, beginning with a goal in the 60
th minute as
Diego Castillo ripped a ball from outside the 18 for his first goal of the year, making it 2-1.
Two minutes later, the Panthers brought home a third goal as
Eduardo Mustre slotted a pass to
Bernardo Dos Santos Monteiro who finished off the play for a goal to put FIU up by two. The junior has scored goals in back-to-back games for the Blue & Gold.
FIU was not done as in the 74
th minute, junior
Eduardo Mustre chipped in for his team-leading eighth goal as he turned in the box, while firing a shot from his left foot.
The scoring spree wrapped up when
Francesco Renzi added with the fifth goal on penalty kick in the 78
th minute.
On the night, the Panthers outshot the Gaels, 15-2, including firing off eight shots in the first half.
