Fort Myers, Fla. - The FIU women's basketball team fell for the first time this season, dropping to 2-1 after an 81-48 road defeat at Florida Gulf Coast Tuesday at Alico Arena.
FIU kept pace with the Eagles early in the first quarter, but trailed by nine after one, 21-12.
FGCU (2-1) pulled away in the second and third quarters, outscoring the Panthers 44-25 through the middle 20 minutes to take a 62-37 lead into the final frame.
The Panthers put three players in double figures, led by graduate student Olivia Trice, who tabbed 15 off the bench in 34 minutes played, the most minutes she has logged this season. Trice shot 4-of-7 from the field, including 2-of-3 from behind the arc and 5-of-6 from the free throw line.
Graduate student Kaliah Henderson added 10 points on 3-of-7 shooting, while going 4-of-6 from the charity stripe. Additionally, sophomore Mya Kone tacked on 10 points, with three rebounds, a block and a steal in 29 minutes of play.
Junior Courtney Turner ended the game with two points, two offensive rebounds, a block and two steals. She also had the highest +/- differential of all players who played 10 minutes or more.
UP NEXT
After two straight games on the road, FIU will be back at home for a Saturday 1 p.m. ET matinee against Coppin State. The Eagles will play Syracuse on Wednesday before heading down to Miami to play the Panthers. They are 1-2 on the season with their lone win coming against Saint Francis last Monday.
