MIAMI (Mar. 12, 2023) – Baseball closed out its series against Marist on Sunday with a dramatic walk-off win, 13-12, to sweep the series. The Panthers are on an eight-game win streak, the longest streak since the 2017.
Junior
Ryne Guida was the offensive catalyst for the Panthers, going 3-5 with four RBI and two home runs.
Sophomore
Marcus O'Malley had one of his best days as a Panther, going 2-5 with two RBI, a home run and drawing a walk that became the winning run.
Marist struck first in the game scoring two in the top of the first inning. The Red Foxes followed that up with seven more runs in the second inning to take the lead, 9-0.
The Panthers began to chip away at their deficit in the bottom of the second.
Steven Ondina laced a pitch over the center fielder's head for a two-run double to make the score 9-2.
FIU added two more runs in the third after an errant throw by the Marist shortstop allowed one and
Ronny Medina delivered the other with a RBI single.
The Panthers continued to score, putting up four more runs in the fourth.
Robert Sotolongo led the inning off with a solo homerun with Guida then hitting a three-run shot to bring the score to 9-8.
FIU would tie the game in the sixth off a Guida solo home run, his second of the day.
The Red Foxes would retake the lead in the top of the next inning. FIU responded with a two-run homerun by O'Malley to give the Panthers their first lead of the game, 11-10, heading into the eighth.
In the bottom of the eighth, pinch hitter
Ruben Carpio pushed home what looked to be and insurance run with a well hit SAC fly to left field, but the Red Foxes would tie the game at 12-12 after scoring two in the top of the ninth.
The bottom of the ninth opened with a seven-pitch walk for O'Malley. Representing the game-winning run, O'Malley moved into scoring position after a Marist balk.
The next batter was
Tim McHugh for his first-ever at bat as a Panther. He would go down 0-2 in the count before hitting a pitch down the left field line and past the diving third baseman to give FIU the walk-off victory.
