Baseball Takes Series Finale Against Harvard, 9-8, Via 12th Inning Walk-Off

Panthers sweep the Crimson and move to 7-6 on the season

MIAMI (Mar. 5, 2023) – Baseball faced Harvard on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a four-game series, winning via extra inning walk-off, 9-8. The Panthers' swept the series and finish the weekend with three walk-off victories.
 
Junior Steven Ondina had a strong game at the plate, going 3-5 with a walk, two RBI and the game-winning hit. Junior Dante Girardi also had a good showing, getting two hits, drawing a walk, driving in two runs and scoring the tying run in the bottom of the 12th.
 
It was a fast start for both teams with a 1-1 score after the first inning. Both teams hit a leadoff double and had both runs score on sacrifices.
 
A solo home run by the Crimson in the third would put them up, 2-1.
 
FIU took control of the game with a big fifth inning, going ahead 6-2.
 
Five-straight hits would get the first two runs across with Ondina and Girardi picking up an RBI. An Adrian Figueroa RBI single and Bryan Loriga RBI double to cap the five-run inning.
 
 The two sides would trade runs in sixth with FIU ahead 7-3 at the top of the ninth.
 
Harvard would hit two home runs in the ninth to tie the game, eventually forcing extra innings with the game knotted at 7-7.
 
The scoring would resume in the top of the 12th as the Crimson regained the lead, 8-7, with another solo home run.
 
With three outs left, the Panthers looked to walk-off for a third time in four games.
 
FIU started the inning strong with a Girardi single and a Ryne Guida walk. Figueroa advanced the runners with a sharply hit out to the shortstop. Henry Wallen would then get hit by a pitch to load the bases. A wild pitch sent home the tying run.
 
With two outs and the bases loaded, Ondina stepped into the batter's box. He would make great contact with fourth pitch of the at bat and send it through the left side to score the winning run, 9-8.

FIU is back at FIU Baseball Stadium on Wednesday March 8 for a midweek clash with Stetson. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. Fans can watch the game live on C-USA TV.
