Baseball Narrowly Edged Out by No. 22 UTSA, 9-8

Panthers’ Carpio goes 4-5 with five RBI

MIAMI (April 23, 2023) – A late-game comeback fell just short as the FIU baseball team dropped game two against No. 22 UTSA, 9-8, Sunday morning.
  
Ruben Carpio had a swung the bat well going 4-5 with five RBI. With a walk in the bottom of the second, Alec Sanchez extended his on-base streak to 21.
 
FIU was on the board first, going up 1-0 after the first.
 
The Panther's opened their half inning with four-straight singles. Carpio capped the streak with a shot through the left side to score leadoff man Mike Rosario.
 
UTSA would take the lead in the top of the second, 4-1, after hitting three home runs. Sammy Diaz hit a two-run home run with Garrett Poston and Leyton Barry hitting solo home runs.
 
The FIU bats stayed hot and added two runs in the third inning to make the score 4-3.
 
A walk for Alec Sanchez and singles by Craig Palidar and Noel Perez loaded the bases for Carpio who drove in two with a single over a leaping shortstop.
 
The Roadrunners pushed their advantage to 6-3 in the top of the fifth. An Antonio Valdez groundout to second drove in both runs.
 
The Panthers would tie the game up in the next half-inning.
 
Adrian Figueroa dropped a ball right on the right field line for a RBI single. Noel Perez tied the game with a two-run single to right field as well.
 
UTSA took the lead back in the sixth, 9-6, with a three-run inning. Poston added two RBI to his total with a double to right center, while Barry recorded his second RBI with a single to left.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, inclement weather would come to FIU Baseball Stadium forcing the game to be suspended with play resuming the next morning.
 
FIU began to mount a comeback in the bottom of the eight, scoring two runs.
 
Two singles and a throwing error would put two runner in scoring position for Carpio who swatted a ball through the right to score both men and bring the Panthers within one.
 
The Panthers could not complete the comeback, falling to the Roadrunners, 9-8.
 
UP NEXT
The Panthers head to Boca Raton next weekend to take on Florida Atlantic University. Game one is set for Friday April 28 with first pitch at 6:30 p.m.
