MIAMI (April 23, 2023) – Pitchers
Ryan Cabarcas and
Bryan Pazos led a complete performance by the FIU Baseball team as they defeated No. 22 UTSA, 6-1, Sunday afternoon.
Cabarcas and Pazos were lights out on the mound allowing only four hits and one run against the top team in Conference USA.
Cabarcas went four innings, allowing only two hits, no runs and punching out eight Roadrunners to earn the win. Pazos threw five innings, allowing just two hits and registering the save.
The Panthers continued their pattern of scoring first, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Dante Girardi got himself into scoring position with a double to deep right field and was driven in by
Ruben Carpio's RBI single through the left side.
FIU doubled the advantage in the second after a sacrifice fly by
Noel Perez drove in
Adrian Figueroa.
FIU pushed the score to 3-0 after Perez hit a solo shot over the right field wall, his first home run of the season, to lead off the fifth inning.
The Roadrunners would manufacture a run in the top of the sixth with a leadoff walk by Leyton Barry, fly out to advance the runner, a steal of third by Barry and a ground out by Sammy Diaz to score the run.
In the bottom of the sixth, Carpio hit a solo home run of his own to make the score 4-1.
The Panthers added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
FIU worked three walks in the bottom of the seventh to load the bases with just one out on the board. Sanchez would push home a run with a ground out to second.
Three-straight singles to open the eighth inning would see
Brendan Roney put FIU ahead 6-1, with a RBI single to center field.
A 6-4-3 double play and a ground out to shortstop in the top of the ninth would secure the victory over UTSA, 6-1.
UP NEXT
The Panthers head to Boca Raton next weekend to take on Florida Atlantic University. Game one is set for Friday April 28 with first pitch at 6:30 p.m.
