BOCA RATON, Fla. (April 28, 2023) –The FIU baseball team made the quick trip up north for the series opener against Florida Atlantic, falling to the Owls, 13-3.
Florida Atlantic came out swinging, taking an 11-0 lead after three innings.
In first inning, FAU scored five runs on four hits with John Schroeder scoring first with a sacrifice fly, Mitchell Hartigan and Spencer Rich picking up RBI singles and Christian Adams scoring the fourth and fifth runs with a two-run single to right field.
A Dylan Goldstein two-run home run and RBI doubles from Hartigan and Rich would make the score 9-0 for Florida Atlantic.
The Owls added two more in their half of the third after an error allowed a run to score and Hartigan hit his second RBI single of the night.
A seven-pitch battle in the fourth for
Alec Sanchez ended in a walk, pushing his on-base streak to 23 games.
Brendan Roney would break up the FAU no-hitter in the bottom of fifth with a hard-hit single up the middle, his fifth-straight game with a hit.
Sanchez put FIU on the board in the top of the sixth with a towering solo home run over the score board in right field.
Florida Atlantic increased their lead in the bottom of the fifth to 13-1 on a ground out by Hartigan and a wild pitch allowing a runner to score.
The Panthers tacked on two runs in the top of the ninth off a
Ryne Guida two-run homerun, eventually falling to the Owls, 13-3.

The Panthers are back in action Saturday April 29 for game two against FAU. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. Fans can watch the game live on C-USA TV.
