MIAMI (May 14, 2023) – The FIU baseball team closed out its series against Charlotte on Sunday, losing a hard-fought game to the 49ers, 9-6.

Charlotte took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Jake Cunningham opened the scoring with a two-run single, with a passed ball adding the third.

The Panthers struck back in the home half inning after a double by
Ryne Guida scored Sanchez from first, making the score 3-1.

FIU would go on to take the lead in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs.
Â
Walks by Rosario and Guida put men in scoring position for
Bryan Loriga. The hot hitting sophmore delivered a double down the right field line to tie the game.

Wallen followed that up with a RBI single up the middle to put FIU up, 4-3.

The 49ers counter punched in the top of the fourth to regaining the lead, 7-4.

Jack Dragum tied the game at 4-4 with a RBI single through the middle. A three-run home run by Cunningham put Charlotte back in the lead.

The Panthers found a response in the sixth when
Roylan Quevedo dropped a ball right on the left field line to score two for FIU, bringing the score to 7-6.

Charlotte added an insurance run in the seventh after a Dante DeFranco grounder to third forced an error and allowed a run to score, pushing the 49ers' advantage to 8-6.

The 49ers would go up 9-6 in the top of the ninth with the Panthers unable to find one more response and losing the game.
