MIAMI (May 7, 2023) – The FIU baseball team hosted Western Kentucky in the rubber match of a three-game series on Sunday, losing a low scoring game to the Hilltoppers, 3-1.
The Panthers were on the board first after
Alec Sanchez hit a solo home run in the top of the first to give FIU a 1-0 lead. The home run moved Sanchez's on-base streak to 29 games and his current hitting streak to six games.
Western Kentucky tied the game up, 1-1, in the top of the second after Lukas Farris hit a leadoff home run over the left field wall.
FIU starter
Kevin Martin was solid after giving up the solo shot. The sophomore went on to throw three scoreless innings, allowing only two hits, one run and at one point retiring seven-straight batters.
The Hilltoppers took a 3-1 lead after the top of the sixth inning. WKU's Tristin Garcia doubled to deep left field to score both runs.
Richie Pena and
Daniel McAuliff picked up where Martin left off, holding the WKU lead at 3-1. The duo pitched 3.1 innings, struck out two batters and allowed only one hit.
