THIBODAUX, La. – The FIU women's soccer team dominated in its 2023 season opener, taking down Alcorn State in a 6-0 shutout on Friday evening from the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex.
The six goals were the most scored in a game since scoring seven on Oct. 21, 2012 vs Arkansas Little Rock – a span of 171 games.
With the victory, the Panthers have won their season opener for the third time over the last four seasons.
FIU struck first in the seventh minute when junior
Noemi Paquin found sophomore
Kim Schneider, who sunk a ball into the low right corner of the net to give the Panthers the early lead.
In the 12th minute, a foul by Alcorn State gave way for the Panthers' goal leader in 2022, junior
Nikole Solis, to bury a penalty kick for her first goal of the 2023 campaign, increasing the lead to 2-0.
Gearing into the 29th minute, senior Dominque Marcelli found graduate student
Camille Sahirul open for a tally as FIU upped the margin to 3-0 heading into the half. The offense took major control in the first 45 - outshooting Alcorn State 21-0.
After halftime, the Blue & Gold never let their foot off the gas, immediately scoring 2:33 into the second half as Scheneider notched her second goal on a breakaway.
The Panthers continued to maintain control as just three minutes after Schneider's goal, Paquin found a pocket in the right corner of the net to notch her first goal of the season on assists from Sahirul and Schneider.
In the 61st minute, sophomore
Chinatsu Kaio brought home the sixth goal on a find from
Paige Davis to cap off the offensive outburst.
A total of five players found the net including Scheneider, who paced FIU in goals (2) on the evening and added an assist. Conference USA Preseason Team selection Solis led the Panthers in shots on goal with six and totaled eight shots.
Paquin leveled with a goal and assist on four shots on goal.
