MIAMI - The FIU men's soccer team tallied five goals as they welcomed in American Athletic Conference play with a 5-1 victory on Saturday night against the Temple Owls.
The Panthers opened the score thanks to an Eduardo Mustre goal in the 18th minute of action. Matthias Lavenant recorded an assist. That marked his fourth goal of the season.
Almost 20 minutes later, Matthias Lavenant tacked on the second goal of the night to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead entering the half. That was Lavenant's first goal of the season, and his first since the 2021 season.
The second half of action featured three goals, with one of them being a late game penalty.
In the 60th minute, Bernardo Dos Santos Monteiro scored into the top right corner of the net to give the Panthers a commanding 3-0 lead with just a bit over 30 minutes to play. This was the third goal of the season for Dos Santos Monteiro.
The Temple Owls committed their first big foul of the game in the 84th minute, which paved the way for Fumiya Shiraishi to score FIUs' fourth goal of the night.
The fifth and final goal for FIU came in the 85th minute of action thanks to Simon Afrifa who scored to the bottom of the left of the net.
In the 86th, Temple added on a score to close the night, 5-1.
