MIAMI – FlU's men's soccer program used two-second half goals to defeat USF 2-1 in front of a raucous crowd at the FIU Soccer Stadium on Friday evening.
FIU (5-2-2, 3-0 American) battled to a scoreless first half with USF (2-6, 0-2 American) in a matchup of last season's American Athletic Conference Championship match. The Panthers' relentless attack struck for the opening goal in the 53rd minute as Joao Dominguez slotted a left-footed shot past a diving USF goalkeeper to put FIU ahead.
Almost exactly ten minutes later, the Panthers' high-pressing helped to double the advantage as Eduardo Mustre broke up a back pass to the keeper and rolled a composed finish into an open net.
The Bulls got on the board late via a penalty kick goal in the 83rd minute, but the FIU backline solidified for the final seven minutes to secure a Panther victory, keeping Kyle Russell's bunch unblemished in American Athletic Conference play.
As a team, FIU had 13 shots, nine on target. The Panther defense held USF to just six shots and two on goal. Tyler Hogan earned the victory in net with one save, playing all 90 minutes.
