MIAMI – With just 2:28 seconds left in the match, FIU junior
Nikole Solis sinked a penalty shot to secure a 1-0 victory over crosstown rival, the Miami Hurricanes, on Thursday night from FIU Soccer Stadium.
Sophomore
Brealyn Viamille was tripped in the box, issuing a penalty kick for FIU and setting up the game-winning goal for the Blue & Gold.
Solis tallied her 8
th goal of the season, setting a new career-high in goals, passing her seven marked in 2022. In addition, her score puts the junior top five nationally in goals.
FIU (5-1-1) had the edge over Miami the first half with stout defense and aggressive, outshooting the Hurricanes, 5-1, in the first 45 heading into the break.
Into the second half, FIU added pressure recording six shots in the last 45, including shots on goal by junior
Noemi Paquin (2) and Solis (2).
The break finally came in the last five minutes with the Solis score to give FIU the victory on the night.
Goalkeeper
Ithaisa Vinoly was sensational in net, allowing no goals and recording her fourth clean-sheet of the season, which is a career-high for the graduate student in a FIU uniform.
With the win, FIU records their first victory over Miami and Power 5 win since 2016.
The 5-1-1 record is the best start in program history since the 1996 campaign.

The Panthers will be back in action on Sunday night for a matchup against the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles on Sep. 10.
