GAINESVILLE, Fla (January 19, 2024) - FIU completed day one of the RADD Sports College Invitational in Gainesville, picking up a pair of victories to begin the weekend. 

Nicole Janse Van Rensburg earned her second win of the season in the pole vault, leaping to a mark of 3.92m this week. FIU placed first, second, and third in the event, with Luciana Gomez-Iriondo and Sydney Nicholson behind Van Rensburg. 

DAY ONE RESULTS

In the 3000, Valerie Lastra began her season in style with a victory in a time of 9:33.07, a 25-second personal best. Lastra placed first in a field of 35 competitors. 

"A very solid day today, especially with a lot of our athletes opening up their season," said head coach Ryan Heberling. "I'm excited to see us continue to put together good performances tomorrow." 

Janiya Cesar placed third in the shot put throwing 16.46m, more than a four-foot improvement from last week at the Jimmy Carnes Invite. 

Sabrina Gomez put together an impressive performance in the 600, placing fourth of 13 with a time of 1:36.89. 

Action will continue tomorrow, beginning at 10 am with the women's mile.
