Men's Soccer Battles to Hard-Fought Conference Draw at No. 22 Charlotte

Panthers snap the nation's longest active home win streak

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The FIU men's soccer program battled to a hard-fought draw Saturday night in a 0-0 decision against the No. 22 Charlotte 49ers Saturday night.
 
With the draw, FIU (4-4-3 (2-1-1 AAC) ended the 49ers' 11-game home winning streak, which had been the longest active streak in the nation.
 
Both teams now sit in second place tied with seven points through four conference games.
 
The Panthers are now unbeaten in seven out of their last eight matches, dating back to Sept. 2. Saturday's clean sheet marks the second of the season for FIU, the first being a 0-0 draw at then-No. 16 Georgetown.
 
The first half saw both teams battling for control, with a combined total of six shots. FIU's defense held firm, with back-to-back saves in the 41st and 42nd minutes.
 
FIU upped the intensity in the second half, registering three shots, two of which were on target. The Panthers nearly broke the deadlock in the 88th minute when Eduardo Mustre's effort was saved, followed closely by a shot from Diego Castillo in the 89th minute that was also denied.
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Nigel Van Haveren was instrumental in the draw, securing his second clean sheet of the season with three key saves. Van Haveren now leads the AAC with 47 saves on the season.
 
Six Panthers played the full 90 minutes, including midfielders Joao Domingues and Nicolas Villalobos, contributing to the draw.
 
UP NEXT
FIU close out the road trip with it's final non-conference match of the season taking on the (RV) VCU Rams on Wednesday, Oct. 16. Kickoff from Richmond, Virginia is set for 7 p.m. and can be streamed on ESPN+.
