RICHMOND, Va. – The FIU men's soccer program drew in a 1-1 decision Wednesday night to the VCU Rams in their final non-conference match of the season.
FIU (4-4-4) secured their fourth draw of the season with all four draws coming away from home.
The Panthers took an early lead in the 9th minute when forward
Eduardo Mustre found the back of the net, scoring his first goal of the season. Mustre, making his first start since Aug. 22, capitalized on a well-placed ball from Joao Domingues, slotting it home with a confident strike off his right foot.
FIU controlled the tempo in the first half, managing six shots while holding a slim 1-0 advantage at the break.
In the second half, VCU leveled the match in the 61st minute. Despite the equalizer, FIU goalkeeper
Nigel Van Haveren stood tall, making five crucial saves in the second half alone. Van Haveren finished the game with six saves, bringing his season total to 53—currently the highest in the American Athletic Conference.
The Panthers were aggressive throughout the contest, recording 15 shots, with eight on target. Mustre led the team with five shots, three of which were on goal. Senior
Bernardo Dos Santos Monteiro contributed three shots, while
Julien Gastaldy added two more.
