Women's Basketball Dominates in Thanksgiving Classic Victory

Two Panthers score 20+ points, and history was made in the second quarter

Miami, Fla - FIU Women's Hoops wins big over Wagner in a 87-52 blowout in the first round of the FIU Thanksgiving Classic, allowing a program low 0 points in the second quarter in the process along with two Panthers scoring 20+ points.

The matchup started off as a back-and-forth affair in the first quarter, with the teams trading buckets and Wagner ending the opening frame in the lead, 15-13. Junior Parris Atkins led the scoring for the home team, scoring eight points in the first. The guard ended with 12 points, five rebounds, six assists and a game-high five steals.

FIU broke the game open in the second quarter, scoring 28 points in the frame and allowing zero points in the entire 10 minutes before the half, a program record for fewest points allowed in a single quarter. Senior Isnelle Natabou dominated, scoring eight points on 4-4 shooting. The Czech Republic-native had her best game as a Panther, ending the contest with 21 points, six rebounds and two blocks. The 21 points is her most points scored since the 2022-23 season when she put up 23 points as a member of Sacramento State. The Panthers would go into the half up 41-15.

The two teams traded buckets out of the half, but the Panthers once again showed their offensive prowess, scoring 13 straight points from the 5:14 mark to the 1:08 mark of the third quarter. Junior Angena Belloso scored the final five points of the FIU surge, ending the match in double-digits with 10 points. She added on three assists and three steals to her line, while going 2-4 from beyond the arc. The Panthers would lead going into the final quarter up 62-31.

FIU would not let up in the fourth quarter, scoring 25, led by Bineta Diatta with 10 points. The senior scored 20 points in the afternoon, a career-high for the Senegal-native. The forward added nine rebounds and two steals to her line.

The Panthers dominated every stat category, winning points off turnovers (32-12), total rebounds (43-23), second-chance points (18-4), and especially points in the paint, scoring 54 of their 87 points down low.
