Softball Rallies for Win Over Army on Opening Day of Panther Invitational

Panthers post comeback win with four runs in bottom of fifth

MIAMI – The FIU softball team battled back from an early 3-0 deficit to post a 5-4 victory over Army on Friday afternoon in its opening game of the Panther Invitational at Felsberg Field.

The Panthers rallied with a four-run fifth to claim the lead for good at 4-3.  FIU loaded the bases with no outs, following three consecutive hits to open the frame by Makayla Navarro (double), Zamya McBurrows (single) and Collier Peaden (bunt single).

The Panthers then recorded a pair of runs off bases loaded walks and scored on a RBI fielder's choice and a run-scoring single by Ella Whitney.

FIU (4-4) added a single run in the bottom of the sixth when Peade crossed following an error by Army to increase the lead to 5-3.

Army (0-7) opened the early lead on a two-out RBI single by Kayla Edwards in the top of the third that scored a pair of runs.  The Black Knights upped the margin to 3-0 in the fourth on a run-scoring bunt single by Julia Farris.

Brooke McNichols (2-1) earned the win in relief after tossing the final four innings and limiting Army to one run while scattering six hits.

Olivia Farris (0-3) took the loss for the Black Knights.  She allowed four runs and five hits.

Peaden finished with three hits in the win over Army for the Panthers – her fifth multi-hit game of the year over the initial eight games.

Senior Bailey Grossenbacher recorded a single in the fourth to extend her current hitting streak to seven games.

The Panthers closed out the day with a 6-0 loss to No. 10/7 Duke in the nightcap - FIU managed four hits in the loss to the Blue Devils.
