Baseball Clinches CUSA Road Series Against Western Kentucky, 7-3

Dearing and Frett logged homers on the afternoon

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The FIU baseball program completed the CUSA series victory Sunday afternoon, taking down the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers 7-3 from Nick Denes Field.
 
FIU has now started their conference slate, 4-2, with back-to-back conference series clinchers. It marks the first time FIU has won a conference road series since May 13-15 against the UAB Blazers. The Panthers 4-2 record is the best start to a CUSA season since 2014.
 
The long ball was the key storyline on Sunday afternoon as the Panthers belted a pair of homers, led off by Kishon Frett's two-run blast to put FIU ahead of Western Kentucky in the fifth inning, 2-1. Frett has hit a homer in each of the three games played over the weekend, sitting with a team-lead of nine homers on the year.
 
Austin Dearing continued the power of the bat with a grand slam in the ninth inning to give FIU a key cushion and did the job to help earn the series victory. Dearing has now reached base in 12 consecutive games with 13 hits alongside nine RBI and two homers.
 
Ryne Guida tacked on an insurance run in the eighth to put the Panthers up two runs, 3-1, on a RBI single into center.
 
Miami native Joel Pineiro got the ball for his sixth start of the year for FIU, only working 1.2 innings with no earned runs and a pair of strikeouts.
 
Logan Runde came to work in relief and dazzled to earn the win. The Peosta, Iowa allowing one earned run over three innings and two punchouts. Orlando Hernandez held down the Hilltoppers lineup through two innings with two strikeouts. Hernandez has yet to allow an earned run in his past 8.2 innings thrown.
 
Ryan Cabarcas closed out the afternoon to earn his team-leading fourth save of the year, posting 2.1 innings of work with three strikeouts.

FIU heads back home for a rematch agaisnt the Miami Hurricanes from FIU Baseball Stadium on Tuesday, March. 26 at 6 p.m.. It can be streamed live on ESPN+.
