Baseball Rolls to Third Straight Win, Securing 5-1 Victory vs Bethune Cookman

Panthers struck out 14 Wildcats on the night

MIAMI - The FIU Baseball program struck out 14 Bethune Cookman batters on Tuesday night to secure their third straight win from FIU Baseball Stadium.

The theme of the night was clutch pitching as southpaw Ryan Cabarcas came in to pitch in the eighth inning with the bases full and nobody out, striking out the side in order. He carried the momentum with a 5-1 lead into the ninth pulling away for his third save of the season.

"I am really versitaile, and I do whatever that will help the team win, Cabarcas added. "We played a really good ballgame, and glad our pitching stepped up."

It was a scoreless affair through five innings of work until a run came across in the bottom half on a Ryne Guida RBI single that scored Brylan West for his 15th RBI of the season.

Freshman Evan Alwine made his first career collegiate start dazzling allowing no earned runs on just one hit and struck out three.

FIU extended their lead to three in the sixth on a opposite field home run for Jeff Liquori to lead off the inning, his fourth of the season. Brendan Roney chipped in a RBI single to score Chase Engelhard. Roney finished off the night with a pair of hits on Tuesday.

Zac Lampton (1-0) took home his first win of the season mowing down the Wildcats with six punchouts over three innings. Bryce Greene worked a scoreless seventh before Richie Pena came on for relief in the eighth as Bethune Cookman scored on a error to cut the deficit to two.

The Panthers cashed in on a pair of runs in the eighth to up the lead to four as Liquori scored on a wild pitch and a Andre Martinez sacrifice fly.

Offensivley, Guida and Roney secured mult-hit efforts while Armando Becerra,  Engelhard, Liquori and Ulloa all added in with hits on Tuesday.
