Miami, Fla — The FIU Women's Basketball Team falls to New Mexico State 65-56.
New Mexico State jumped out to an early lead, going on a 12-3 run over the first 5:52 of the game. The Aggies ended the first up 16-7. FIU was able to find their shot in the second quarter, shooting 52.8% from three. The Panthers outscored NM State 18-15 in the second quarter cutting the deficit to 3 heading into the half 31-25.
FIU continued shooting well in the third, putting up 19 points and taking a one point lead heading into the final frame. Tanajah Hayes led FIU with eight in the penultimate quarter, as well as FIU in the game. The junior put up 18 points as well as totaling three steals on the afternoon, placing the guard ninth all time on FIU's all-time career steals list with 189 steals.
NM State used two 6-0 runs to take the lead in the fourth and did not look back, giving FIU only their fifth loss of conference play.Olivia Trice was the only other Panther to score in double-digits, going 4-5 from the field, all of which were three-pointers.
UP NEXT
On to the conference tournament! The Panthers will travel to Huntsville, Alabama for the first round of the CUSA tournament as they hunt for the trophy. Opponent and time are yet to be determined.
