Baseball Drops Series Opener to Dallas Baptist

Frett hit his team-leading 13th home run of the season

MIAMI – The FIU baseball program fell to the Dallas Baptist Patriots Friday night in the series opener, losing 9-3 from FIU Baseball Stadium.

Heading into the eighth, FIU trailed by just a run, down 2-1, before the Patriots tallied seven runs combined in the final two innings, including a six-run ninth to secure the victory.

FIU starter Cameron Knox made his 10th start of the season Friday, working four innings on two earned runs and three strikeouts on the bump. He allowed a two-run homer to Grant Jay in the second, making it a 2-0 ballgame.

In the bottom of the fourth, FIU tacked on their first run of the night. With runners on second and third with nobody out, Austin Dearing grounded to the shortstop, scoring Jeff Liquori to cut the deficit in half.

Panthers lefty Zac Lampton kept the game at bay through the middle innings, working three shutout frames on no hits and striking out four. Jackson Ritchey was charged with just an earned run over an inning while Bryce Greene worked the ninth on no earned runs and a hit.

In the ninth, Kishon Frett hit his team-leading 13th home run of the season on a two-run homer.

For the Panthers offense, Chase Engelhard had a two-hit performance with a double, his second multi-hit game since returning to the lineup last Friday, April 19 against New Mexico State.

Ryne Guida extended his team-leading on-base streak to 26 games with double to right field.
