JACKSONVILLE, Ala - The FIU baseball team's comeback fell just short, losing 4-3 on Saturday night to the Jacksonville State Gamecocks on the road.
After the Panthers were down 3-0 into the seventh, FIU stormed back to score three runs of their own to tie up the ballgame, yet in the 11
th inning, the Gamecocks scored the winning run as they have taken the first two games of the series,
In the seventh,
Brendan Roney and
Kishon Frett got on base, before outfielder
Hector Candelas singled to center, scoring Roney.
Brylan West added with an infield single that brought around
Andre Martinez before a wild pitch scored Candelas.
Jacksonville State logged runs in the second and sixth on a pair of homers from Logan Walters.
Joel Pineiro made his eighth start for the Panthers, logging a career-high of eight strikeouts on the night in four innings while allowing one earned run. The redshirt sophomore passes his career-mark of six strikeouts which he netted on March. 3 versus Seton Hall in the 4-1 victory.
Senior
Orlando Hernandez worked 3.2 innings, giving up just an earned run on a strikeout. Ryan Cabarcas was tagged with the loss (4-3), posting 2.2 innings of work with no earned runs and four punchouts.
Hector Candelas led the offense with his first ever three-hit performance and two doubles. Martinez, Roney and West all notched multi-hit performances,
