Baseball Falls to Sam Houston Friday Night

Brendan Roney has hit homers in back-to-back games

MIAMI - The FIU baseball program dropped it's series opener to Sam Houston Friday night, losing 7-1 from FIU Baseball Stadium.

After Sam Houston took a 3-0 lead into the seventh, FIU cut the ballgame to a two-run deficit on a solo homer from Brendan Roney, who has now homered in back-to-back games. In addition, he has set his career-mark in homers in a season with four. 

However, the Bearkats opened the game with four runs in the combined eighth and ninth inning to secure a 7-1 win.

For FIU, they outhit Sam Houston 10-9 with two players logging multi-hit efforts in Brylan West and Alex Ulloa. From the leadoff spot, West went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, netting his fourth straight game with a pair of hits and 16th on the season. Ulloa extended his hit streak to five with his performance.

Cameron Knox (1-5) was tagged with the loss, allowing two earned runs in four innings while striking out three. Kevin Martin showed solid work in the middle relief, working three total innings, allowing just a hit on no earned runs. Richie Pena and Bryce Greene worked the final two innings.

In addition Hector Candelas, Austin Dearing, Chase Engelhard, Kishon Frett, and Roney all posted hits on the night.

FIU gets set for game two of the series against Sam Houston on Saturday, May 11 for a 5 p.m. first pitch. It can be streamed on ESPN+.
