MIAMI – The FIU baseball program dropped it's home finale Tuesday evening, losing 6-5 to the Miami Hurricanes from FIU Baseball Stadium.
FIU (25-26) took a 3-2 lead heading into the sixth before the Hurricanes stormed back, scoring four runs combined from the sixth to eighth innings, clinging to a one-run win.
Miami struck first in the second on a a pair of RBI singles from Daniel Cuvet and Dorian Gonzalez. FIU fought back, beginning in the second as
Alex Ulloa mashed a solo home run to deep left field for his ninth homer of the season. In the third,
Ryne Guida added to his team-leading RBI count to #53 with a single up the middle to score
Brylan West, tying it up at two.
After a pair of scoreless frames, the Panthers took the first lead of the night in the fifth as Guida hit a deep sacrifice fly to left centerfield, scoring West once again. The Hurricanes tied it up in the sixth on a RBI double before taking the lead in the seventh on a RBI walk and groundout, making it 5-3 Miami. It became a three-run deficit in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Lorenzo Carrier.
FIU fought back in the bottom half when Guida scored on a wild pitch, before
Chase Engelhard hit a sacrifice fly, scoring
Jeff Liquori to a one-run game.
In the ninth, trailing a run, FIU was unable to mount a comeback, falling short in the home finale.
Seven FIU pitchers worked the night, beginning with
Kevin Martin who made the start, allowing two earned runs over two innings.
Owen Puk worked relief, giving up no earned runs over three scoreless frames on one hit.
Jackson Ritchey and
Zac Lampton gave up no runs in the final two frames out the bullpen.
Richie Pena (1-2) suffered the loss, giving up two earned runs in 0.2 inning.
A pair of Panthers logged multi-hit efforts including Guida and Engelhard who both had two-hits on the night.

FIU prepares for it's final regular season series of the year as they head up to Des Moines, Iowa to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes from May. 16-18. All three games will be streamed on Big 10+.
