Dallas, Texas - FIU Women's Basketball has been honored with Conferences USA's Sport Academic Award, league officials announced Thursday. The Sport Academic Award is given to the team in each conference-sponsored sport with the highest GPA for the academic year.
Women's hoops ended the academic year with a 3.40 GPA, highest among CUSA women's basketball teams. The team had nine players who earned a 3.0 GPA or higher, and four players who recorded a GPA of 3.75 or higher.
Additionally, FIU was the only CUSA team to have two players selected to the CUSA All-Academic Team in Courtney Prenger and Olivia Trice, with Prenger ending with a 4.0 GPA and Trice ending with a 3.92 GPA. Prenger, along with Maria Torres, were also named as College Sports Communicators Women's Basketball Academic All-District recipients.
Women's basketball is coming off a historic year that saw the team win 20+ games for the first time since the 2011-2012 season, and their first appearance in the WNIT since the 2012-2013 season.
